February 2019: This is when I began to wonder if what I was doing with my life was enough. Enough for me. Enough for my family. Enough for my animals. It was so easy for me to get caught up in the daily routines of life, even if it didn't make me happy. My daughter's have grown up hearing this phrase over and over, "You have to do what you need to do before you can do what you want to do." And I have done exactly that, but about a year ago I became very observant of the fact that I was so caught up in doing what I needed to do that I had totally forgot about what I wanted to do with my life. Help animals. And so the journey began.
This journey began with tons of soul searching. When I was a child I wanted to be a veterinarian. I have always had animals in my life. They were all a very important part of that life. They helped me through hard times and they were there with me through the good times. I've loved and lost and then loved again, because I could not imagine my life without them. My loves have been cats, dogs, birds, goats, chickens, ducks, turkeys, sheep, cows, pigs, owls, hamsters, mice, and last but definitely not least, HORSES! I hate to say one animal has had a larger impact on me over another, because I have loved them all so much, but horses have without a doubt, changed my life the most. I am constantly amazed by how much horses have taught me throughout my life. How to live, how to relax, how to stay grounded, how to stay present, how to be patient, and probably most importantly how to have "real" relationship's that are built on trust, as well as, complete and total acceptance. My connection with horses feels like something straight out of a fairy tale and I soon realized I needed to do something to help give back to them, because of everything they have given me and continue to give to me. So I began researching the equine industries and when I saw equine massage therapy I knew immediately that I had found my true calling.
The next step in this journey began about 5 months later following a horrible car accident. How quickly things can change and without notice. One minute my wife and I were on our way to have some fun and the next we were hanging upside down by our seat belts on the side of the road. An oncoming car failed to turn a corner (reason still unknown) and came fully into our lane. I was able to avoid a head on collision, but the car ended up hitting the back corner of our car, which in turn, sent us spinning and flipping off the road. My wife incurred lots of soft tissue damage and a torn labrum in her hip. I ended up with several compression fractures in my spine (C7-T4). Luckily, surgery was not necessary, because nothing moved out of place and my spinal cord was unaffected. However, being confined in a full brace for 3 months, from neck to belly button, allowed for much contemplating and soul searching.
It didn't take me long to decide that if I came out of this situation healthy that I was going to pursue my dream of helping animals. To help me stay positive, that I would indeed come out of this situation healthy, I made the decision to become certified in equine massage therapy and small animal massage therapy through Holistic Animal Studies by Angel's Animals LLC (an accredited course by the International Association of Animal Massage, IAAMB and the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, NCBTMB). one step at a time, I completed my coursework and as soon as I was healthy enough to begin my hands-on-hours, I jumped on it.
One year after the accident (July 2020), I began working on clients horses and dogs. I have never felt more balanced in my life. I have never been so sure I was doing what I was meant to do with my life. I have never known life could be this good. Every new animal I work on is important to me and I am looking forward to helping as many as I can for as long as I can!!
I just wanted to give my viewers a little more information about me and how I started my journey. Enjoy!
